Le Vieux Pané – French Washed-Rind Cheese
Le Vieux Pané – French Washed-Rind Cheese
Milk: Cow
Origin: France (Mayenne)
Aging: ~3 months
Le Vieux Pané (meaning "old bread") is a bold yet beautifully balanced French washed-rind cheese from the Mayenne region of France, made from pasteurized cow's milk. Recognizable by its thin, moist, sticky orange-brown rind, this cheese delivers a powerful aroma that gives way to a surprisingly smooth, buttery, and gently savoury flavour.
Aged for approximately three months, Vieux Pané develops a soft, springy paste that melts effortlessly on the palate. Despite its pungent scent, the flavour remains approachable—creamy with subtle tang, mild bitterness, and delicate nutty undertones—making it a favourite among washed-rind enthusiasts.
Pairs well with:
Crusty bread, apples, pears, dried fruits, cured meats, mustard, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, dry cider, Belgian-style ales.
